Family Camp-in at Pittsfield!

Haven't had a chance to camp yet this summer? Join us at the Pittsfield Branch on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 from 7 - 8 p.m. as we have our annual camping night.

This year we'll feature moose.

They can be very funny, those mooses.
We'll have a campfire that we'll gather around. We'll have Sara Keller lead us in some camp songs, hear a couple of moose stories, eat s'mores and make moose antlers to wear. What a fun night for the whole family!

Trash Tanks Science Program

Saturday August 11 | 3:00 - 4:00pm | Malletts Creek Branch

Interested in what happens to our trash? Have you ever wondered what types of items decompose? Visit us at the Malletts Creek Branch on Saturday August 11 to build your very own trash tank. We will use common household items, soil, and water to start your experiment. You will also receive the tools you need to continue the experiment over the summer. After all, trash doesn't decompose over night!

Make Your Own Board Game

Calling all kids in grades K - 5 to come use your imaginations to make your own board game.

On Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m at the Pittsfield Branch we'll have all the boards and supplies that you need to map out an adventure. Build your own game board, write your own rules, invent your own characters.

Build a Better Bubble Science Program

Do you like bubbles? Have you ever used your own home-made bubble solution? Blowing bubbles is a fun activity and through this science program, you will be able to experiment with various home-made bubble solutions.

You can also check out our summer JUMP brochure for lots of other fun science programs.

Along with putting your observation skills to work, you will also be able to make your own bubble wands and take a sample of a bubble-solution home with you. Look here for more resources on bubbles at AADL.

Nature's Recyclers: Vultures, Rats & Roaches - Tuesday July 17, 2012 - Pittsfield Branch - 1-2pm - Grades K-12

Learn to love nature’s unhuggables with a visit from a turkey vulture, rat, and cockroaches from the Leslie Science & Nature Center. If you've wanted to get a closer look at the roaches from the Pittsfield exhibit, then now's you chance, and there may even be an impressive new species brought along as well. We'll discover the important role of scavengers and recyclers in our everyday lives as we learn about habitats, adaptations, life cycles, conservation, food webs, classification, decomposers, scavengers and recycling. This event is intended for grades K-12.

Happy Birthday, America!

It's time for our annual star-spangled holiday. It's time to celebrate America's 236th birthday.

Come to the Pittsfield Branch Library on Tuesday, July 3rd from 2:00-3:00 p.m. to make some decorations for your party.
We'll have some ideas of projects you can do, but you will be free to make anything you want out of our red, white and blue supplies. This is for preschool - grade 5.

Duct Tape Balls!

If you are between Kindergarten and 8th grade and were wondering what to do this Wednesday, join us at the Pittsfield Branch in the Program Room from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. to make your very own duct tape bouncy ball!

You can make a very special ball that will be incredibly durable and will last most, if not all summer long! Imagine playing kickball in your backyard, soccer at the park, or even volleyball at the beach! You are sure to get lots of compliments on your amazing, new duct tape creation!

Collage Tiles @ Pittsfield

We’re getting crafty with collage at Pittsfield! Siobhan Lyle, owner of Blue House Mobile Craft Studio, will lead a workshop in upcycling tiles into art. Come learn about shape, color, and collaging at this DIY event. We’ll provide all the supplies, you supply the creativity.

Keep in mind, the AADL Summer Game will be in effect-- and you can earn points by attending summer programs.

Glow Lab!

Cockroach Exhibit at Pittsfield Branch is Cause for Celebration.

Cockroaches often get a bad rap, and there's a whole host of misconceptions surrounding them, starting with the belief that they're dirty. Not so, and thanks to a new exhibit from the Leslie Science & Nature Center you can see just how clean they are by visiting the Pittsfield Branch. Two distinct species of live roaches will be on display for the summer, one winged and one flightless. Come learn about these oft-despised and misunderstood creatures, and make sure to look for the Summer Game code to earn 100 points for visiting the cockroaches.
