Brainfuse and SAT/ACT prep

Both the ACT and SAT take place the beginning of December, so now is a great time to get to studying! Brainfuse Helpnow is a database patrons may access from any AADL branch, or from your home computer when logged into your AADL account.

All practice tests are located in SkillSurfer. Simply click SkillSurfer from the homepage then choose College Entrance Test Prep to find the preparation guides and practice tests. Patrons can enhance their practice test experience by connecting to live tutors from 3 - 11 p.m., 7 days a week! Tutors are able to see the test feedback and can help with understanding specific test questions and building skills in various topics.

Be sure to browse the catalog for ACT and SAT test prep books, and check in with Circle K Homework Help session as well!

When you take charge of your financial future with a Money Management course from MSU Extension, you can have more money for the things that make you happiest and save money for life’s storms that come your way. You will learn how to make sound financial decisions, create financial goals, pay down debt and use credit wisely, and create a spending plan to save more.

Dollar Works! Money Management Series is co-sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley and will be held on Thursdays August 18, 25, September 1, and 8 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center. Library resources to help with the college application process

If you are a high school senior (or anyone!) who will be working on applying to colleges this fall, the library has some wonderful resources that can help you excel at the application process. Fiske real college essays that work outlines how to write an excellent college application essay and provides real examples of successful essays. It also emphasizes common mistakes in college application essays, so that you can know what to avoid during the writing process.

In the Scholarship handbook (2015 edition), the College Board provides information on awards, scholarships, and loans that may be available to you. This book offers tips on how to go about applying for student aid, and is extremely helpful if you are wondering about the various options that may be available to you to help pay for college. Along this same vein is Peterson’s scholarships, grants and prizes, 2015, which is useful for those applying to graduate school as well.

If you’re not even sure yet where you might want to apply to college, we have resources to help with that too! Try The Insider’s Guide to the Colleges, 2015 and the Fiske guide to colleges, both of which offer profiles and information about a huge range of schools, public and private. And, if you are planning to visit some of the schools that you are interested in, Campus visits and college interviews: a complete guide for college-bound students and their families could also be helpful for you!

UM Foundations and Grants Librarian Dr. Karen Downing and French Studies Librarian, Jennifer Bonnet present a workshop for high schoolers, their parents, and anyone seeking funding for college.

Learn about a variety of specialized Web resources, how to articulate a plan of study, identify potential funders, and apply for relevant educational grants.

We will also compare free Web resources and subscription-based services (U-M pays the subscription and provides free access). Participants will have time to search for scholarships during the session.

For those involved in the college selection process, it's AADL's 7th annual College Night with the co-authors of "Solving the College Admissions Puzzle: A Guide for Students and Families About College Selection, Essay Writing, and High-Stakes Testing"- Community High's college prep counselor John Boshoven; Debbie Merion, the founder of Essay Coaching; and performance coach Geraldine Markel.

This event will include a book signing with copies of the book available for purchase.

National Federation of the Blind of Michigan 2013 Scholarship Program

The National Federation of the Blind of Michigan is pleased to offer two scholarships in the amount of $500 to outstanding blind college students in the state of Michigan. Scholarship winners will be required to attend the entire state convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Michigan, and participate in all activities sponsored by the Michigan Association of Blind Students. This convention will take place October 18-20, 2013 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. All convention expenses including transportation, hotel accommodations, and registration will be provided as part of this scholarship. All application materials must be submitted by Sept. 6, 2013, and winners will be notified by Sept. 27. College Information Night-En Español

Join AADL in partnership with the University of Michigan’s Proyecto Avance: Latino Mentoring Association, or PALMA at the Student Activities Building on Thursday April 4 from 6:00-8:00 PM for an Informational College Night that will be in Spanish or Noche Universitaria en Español. Representatives from other colleges and universities will be on hand to answer questions about applying for college and the whole process. There will also be a representative from the U of M Financial Aid office to field questions. This event is open to the public and geared toward Middle & High School students & their parents. Perhaps some parents and adults are interested in going to college, too! All are welcome to learn about what steps to take to get there.
