Precious essences used in perfumery are sublime and complex. Some of these materials, which are quite ordinary in their natural setting, are capable of transporting our senses beyond evocations of memory. When this happens we migrate from a sense of the familiar into a fearless experience of the unknown. We are led by mystery and olfactory beauty into the Ordinary Extraordinary.

Find out what perfumers discover when curiosity and wonder are engaged for the purpose of understanding complex scents that defy description. You’ll learn how to use these encounters with aromatic beauty to shape a personal olfactory lexicon. This is a powerful tool for supporting communication of sensory experiences that are not supported by vision, as we live in a culture dominated by sight.

Community members who use the Washtenaw Library for the Blind & Physically Disabled and friends and family members who support them are encouraged to attend this event.

The Smell and Tell series of lectures is led by Michelle Krell Kydd, a trained nose in flavors and fragrance who shares her passion for gastronomy and the perfume arts on Glass Petal Smoke. The Smell and Tell series debuted at the Ann Arbor District Library in 2012 and is ongoing.
