Thank Goodness It's Badge Drop!

by andrewjmac

Okay okay okay, time for Badge Drop #6! How could we possibly be at #6? Because #5 happened last week! And I'm freaking amazing at math, so I feel pretty sure this must be #6 (you should probably check me on that, I'm not really that great at math). But before we get to the badges, let's take a look at what you've done so far this Summer Game: you (this is the plural you, not you, personally) have gotten 29,117 badges, you've entered 160,421 codes, and you've earned 28,462,407 points! If that doesn't blow you away, here's a bonus stat for you: in all of Summer Game 2013, 12,043,920 points were earned. What does that mean? It means YOU'VE ALREADY MORE THAN DOUBLED THE POINTS YOU EARNED LAST YEAR!!! Take that, 2013 you! And there's so much left to do--like this week's badges, including a special 2500 point PUBLIC COMMENT MASTER badge, only available by making a public comment at the AADL Library Board Meeting at 7 PM on Monday July 21st at the Downtown Library!

But Badge Drop #6 means something else, something that will make you sit up and take notice, something that may shake you to your very core: this is the midway point of the Summer Game. This badge drop makes the game officially half over! "Say it ain't so!" you are all shouting at your computer screens where I luckily can't hear you. BUT...that also means we've got TWICE as many badges to earn as we've had so far, TWICE as many codes to get as we've gotten so far, and TWICE as many tagsreviewsratingscommentswhatevers to put on aadl.org than we have so far! So there's lots of great Summer Game to come! And if you're desparate for shop news, you'll find some mystery items posted today, not yet available for order but giving you a hint about shop items yet to come! Stay tuned, and as always....

THANKS FOR PLAYING!

Comments

The Srira-cha-cha badge is not showing up above, but is on the badges page; however, the fourth hint only displays the actual code.

Did the code-submit button get so large due to my earlier comment about hitting the giant orange cancel button accidentally?! If so, thank you library people. I won't make that mistake any more! (or I'll feel really stupid when I do.)

Hey, Sara, we like to be responsive! We know we have a lot of tablet players so a large button made sense, thanks for the suggestion. And Willow, that badge should be fixed up now. Thanks!

If one of the especially helpful library folks could check please; I'm pretty sure the last code for the Ice Cream Extremes badge is missing in the catalog. Or possibly I'm clueless...

Ice cream badge final book seems to be missing the code in its record - no one has yet earned the badge, so I'm guessing we're all hung up on that part.
Thanks for another great badge drop!

@kathscott and @mjanen,
Thanks for the heads-up! That last code/clue for the ice cream badge should be in place/clickable for you now.
Give it a shot and let us know! Still looking into what's going on with the Super Super-naturals (hopefully not anything supernatural!)
Thanks!

Hooray! Super-Super... hints should be working now too. If you aren't seeing hints, try to refresh the page and click again.

My child observed that despite the following statement on the Earn Points page:

Earn as many points as you'd like by:
-Attend an AADL Event, get a code, and redeem the code for 200 - 500 points, depending on the event!

the Soda Straw Rocket game code yielded 150 points.

I wasn't able to offer an explanation.

At first I thought the larger 'Submit' button was a bit unnecessary, but after submitting a few codes, I have to say it's actually really nice.

Hi! On the Little Badge of Horrors, fourth code, I know what the event is and have searched it many ways in the catalog without luck, Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for the visit to the 1939 World's Fair! I wish I could have gone there in person after reading the Wikipedia article. Amazing. And a reminder not to rush through searches to find codes when earning badges.

Thanks for another Parks Explorer badge! They are my absolute favorites and we have had so many nice hikes this summer as a result.

Is anyone else having trouble with the tag badges? I've tagged ~75 items but I'm not getting any of the badges. When I go to the information for the badge it says 100% complete and the green bar is completely filled. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Has anyone had luck with the final Polkemania (#83) bonus code? I think I know the components, but have not found any combination that works. Tried rereading and even tried playing a downloaded song in case the code was extra hidden...Any pointers appreciated.

@Bookbird
Thank you! I had the right words, but I was searching the library catalog for the code instead of realizing that I had the code all along.....
This was the first Polkemania badge that didn't leave me wanting to pull my hair out, so it was very frustrating to not get the final bonus easily.

Thanks so much for the final Pokemon bonus hint! I was having the same problem. Now I wonder if the other bonuses I missed were a case of thinking they were to be found in the catalog and not entered as a code. Sometimes it really isn't clear.

I was doing the same thing with the last Pokemon bonus until I realized that there was no other logical way to try and that the clue didn't say to search. It definitely could have been a little clearer, but then I wouldn't have gotten the same satisfaction from figuring it out.

Agreed on PolkeMania badge No 083. Was definitely the easier of the four so far, but that last bonus clue had me really stumped until I saw SBNB's hint and even then it took me a couple of tries to get it right. I was sure I had the right words, and I did, but it didn't occur to me that it was the code not a search.

@bookbird Thanks a lot! I like it when the clue indicates that it's an entry rather than a catalog search. Even then I did try to enter the code but never in the right combination apparently. I keep taking out the double part, rather than leaving one of that syllable in. Thanks again.

Has anyone spoken to the library board before? Is there a time limit? A certain format you follow? I have a proposal, but don't know how detailed I should be.

Matthaei will be having an open house on August 3 (Sunday) from 1:30 to 4:30 pm that will include free admission and free parking for all. So for those who have yet to complete their Matthaei badge, that would be a good opportunity!

I really loved the "Pattern Familiars" badge this week! That was a LOT of fun, looking through the JUMP brochure for the various things needed. Thanks for doing this one!

For the Public Commenter, what kinds of comments do people usually make? Even if I do manage to make it, I don't think I would know what to say... And it's from 7pm to when?

@ Brookbird, I've never been to one of the libraries board meetings, but I've been to other various public meetings which allow for comment, I imagine comments are similar in nature. For the most part, people complain about one thing or another. Some people make statements about what they like or what they think can be improved upon. You can simply go up and make a brief statement about whatever is on your mind, like how much you enjoy the SG.

I also liked the Jump pattern badge, and it looked like there were plenty of patterns left - will there be a second badge?

Good questions about the board meeting! There is a 3 minute time limit. You have to identify yourself, but you can say whatever you'd like to the board. Public comments are first and last on the agenda, so you can certainly make a comment at the beginning of the meeting and then leave! if you miss the first comment window, you will need to wait until the end of the meeting for the second comment period at the end. Hope to see you there!

We are having an EPIC summer thanks to the game. Great badges! We like working on them together.

To all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on 4 badges and I am having a great deal of trouble finding 4 code words for the badges and I am hoping some of you summer gamers out there could give some more clues on where to find the code words I am looking for. I am looking for

1.) The very first code word for the Ghost World badge

2.) The very first code word for the Chrotta badge

3.) The second code word for the something witchy badge

4.) and the fourth code word for the Take the bull by the horns badge

Thank you for the help

Hi there! In the opening prompt for your "Super-Supernaturals" badge, you use the term "insect" much too loosely. One of the primary characteristics of an insect is having 6 legs, not 8. A more appropriate term to use for this 8-legged creature you're hinting at would either be arthropod or invertebrate.

Sorry if I seem like a broken record here, but I still haven't gotten a response.

My first and only order from the summer game shop so far this year was missing more than half of the items. I have the email that confirms my order, so I know I'm not mistaken about what I actually ordered, and I had them check and double check for my bag of stuff at my branch of the library. I sent a message to summer game via "contact us" on the main aadl page on Saturday and I have not received a response of any sort, and no one has responded to my inquiries here either.

What do I do? Should I send another email? Wait some more? Talk to somebody?

To SBNB,
you should wait to get a message from the summer game staff that you contacted through the contact message sight. They will get back to you soon they are busy and it does sometime take a few days to get a message back to you but they will get back to you. I have sent comments myself in the past and it can take a week to get back but they do get back I promise the summer reading program is quite a busy time of year for the staff so they have lots of messages to read and direct to certain summer staff members who are in charge of the summer reading program you are contacting them about. I would wait for an answer to come in your inbox anywhere from tomorrow to this Saturday a message will come.

To all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on the Polkemaina 083 badge and I am having a great deal finding the last three bonus codewords for the badge numbers 3,4,5 I am looking for and I am hoping you summer gamers out there could give me some more clues on where I can find the last three bonus code words.
Thanks so much for the help,
Lmd3577

Can someone help me with Hilarious, Harmless, Hapless code 3. I found out the name of the MTV show. A lot of animations were shown in that show. How do I narrow it down to one to find that collection in DVD? I feel I am missing a clue here...

Can someone help me with badge Super-Supernaturals code #4? Ive tried different combinations of searches in Old News, but I cant find it...

The best way I can give directions on how to get there is I take Stadium Blvd to Liberty and then turn up Liberty as you are going to Quality 16 theaters. Once you get to the major intersection with the traffic light you will want to turn the corner there as if you are going to the Jackson Zeeb road area. You will drive a small way and there is a big sign on your right that says Dolph park and then you are there. I hope these directions help this should also get you out of all the nasty road construction going on.

To all the summer gamers out there,
I am working on the Srir Cha Cha badge and I am looking for the third code word and I am hoping some of you gamers out there could help me with some more clues on where I can find the third codeword.
Thanks so much for the
Lmd3577

@rimpopu For Harmless #3, if you know the MTV show, only one result will include animation. The connection is not clear from the name, but if you just look for the animated result, you should get there.

@eli - Thank you for finding my missing items! I wanted to reply to the email to say thanks, but I wasn't sure if that was possible so I wrote it here. Thanks again!

I have a question after looking at one of the top ranked players' scorecard on the leaderboard: what is "filling an order" and how can other players participate in this (200 points each)? Not all the members have made public their scorecard, but I don't see anyone else on the top of the leaderboard with this activity listed. I ask because this player has over 100,000 points for an activity that other players do not seem to be participating in, which seems unusual.

Thanks, Mariah, for explaining -- I was really curious about that!

I went to Dolph Park this weekend. I found the directions listed on the badge description extremely confusing. We just couldn't understand all the references to Y-intersections, bearing left, and 4 way intersections, so we bumbled our way through what felt like the entire park to find one of the clues. I wish the AA parks map had been clearer.

We've enjoyed the park badges and have discovered several new and wonderful places!

The Dolph Park badge is confusing. And, I guess I missed the first clue. When I enter the man's first name and/or/with the year he donated the land, I get "code not recognized." It's too far away to go back and get it.

I missed the clue the first time and put in the year he bought it. When I sent it in via text message, it was rejected so I went back to reread. He donated it 42 years after buying it. I think that will help if you made the same mistake I did in not reading the kiosk closely enough.

The badge from the Jump catalog was a lot of fun. I'm glad I found the online version of the catalog though, so that I didn't have to type in the answers.

Just finished the Dolph Park badge. If you haven't gone yet, remember to use insect repellant. For the last clue, we had to walk through the parking lot to look for the beginning of the trail that has a wooden pole at the start. There are a lot of branches down on the paths because of the last storm. This made it hard to figure out where the main path was when looking for the 3 benches clue. In the end, we stumbled upon the bench with the plaque first and then backtracked to the 3 benches. My recommendation is to stick to the main paths as best you can and look for the big landmarks (1st and 2nd sister lakes). Also, don't bring a stroller. Many of the trails are very narrow. Good luck.

My tagging OCD made it pretty easy to accumulate those badges. I lost some sleep, but it was for a good cause. I think.
