"In a world where disease has been eliminated, the only way to die is to be randomly killed ('gleaned') by professional reapers ('scythes'). Two teens must compete with each other to become a scythe--a position neither of them wants. The one who becomes a scythe must kill the one who doesn't"-- Provided by publisher.

Cool submitted by frodobaggins on June 17, 2017, 1:49pm Really cool deep book.

Really Well-Written submitted by TRK on June 17, 2017, 1:51pm I think this book is really cool. It gives you a different view to the future and death in general.

Fast read submitted by ashflowtuff on July 2, 2017, 6:26pm This was a really interesting story with well developed characters. The story will really pull you in and you won't be able to put this book down. I finished it in two days. It's pretty violent and a bit graphic, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger than high school readers.

Intriguing submitted by pixel gamer 3000 on August 13, 2017, 11:04am Scythe is a unique book. I haven't read many like it. It really makes you think about death, and killing, and the moral implications of many different things. The entire book pulls you in and begs you not to stop reading. I would totally suggest this book to any avid reader of sci-fi.

Interesting universe/concept submitted by Xris on June 16, 2018, 7:58pm Shusterman always has a dark look at things, but in a way that makes it a riveting read. Want to read the next one!

Amazing and Thought-Provoking submitted by sophie.motawi on June 18, 2018, 10:08pm Unlike anything I've ever read, Neal brought us a intriguing and fantastic story! It made me as a reader think about the values we have that make us human. Each chapter kept me on my toes, and the ending is phenomenal. A great read.

Decent writing, incredible ideas and themes submitted by kassafrass on July 28, 2018, 10:16am Shusterman's writing is not particularly subtle, or exceptionally elegant, but I think it works well enough for his target audience. Characters range from okay to good, but only one or two are great. However, his creativity, ideas, and themes get a five star rating from me. Loved the thought provoking ideas about death, suicide, compassion, grief, and mortality in this book.

Wonderful Book! submitted by Nicola on June 25, 2019, 6:08pm My son really enjoyed the book, if you like dystopian and futuristic books, you will love this one!

Beautiful submitted by sbeegees on August 6, 2019, 1:03pm One of my all time favorite books, really makes you think about the world. I love it.

Something different in YA Dystopian Fiction submitted by callmeavni on July 19, 2021, 8:45am 4.5/5 stars
An extremely gripping novel that had me at the edge of my seat till the very end, while also diving deep into the moral implications of various actions. The premise that we as humans conquer death, leaving only designated killers (Scythes) to be the ones permitted to end our lives for population control feels so far off, but the human-ness of the characters makes it feel so real. It's different than a lot of the cookie-cutter YA Dystopian novels I've read, and I highly recommend this for people in middle school and up.

loved it submitted by .-.-.-. on June 10, 2022, 9:20pm A great book. There is action in every chapter and there are many quick and surprising changes in the book that make it a very good read. 5/5 stars

Super popular YA submitted by ahlalejini on July 21, 2022, 9:14am My students absolutely love this one- it's so gripping!

My teenager encouraged me to read this series submitted by katieepage on July 25, 2022, 1:22am Scythe’s story line and characters pull you in, but this series was far too long and convoluted. I felt like I couldn’t stop, the story was compelling, but got more and more absurd as the series progresses. Thought provoking social commentary, but not the best piece of literature.

Excellent submitted by quynhssong on July 25, 2022, 6:05pm Really good

Great Book submitted by wysea on June 9, 2023, 10:30pm This book was a very enjoyable read! I always wanted to find out what happened next and couldn't put it down. It is an excellent novel about a potential future. It reminded me of the book "Ready Player One" by Earnest Cline because they both take place in post-apocalyptic futures and what would happen if technology advanced too far.

Great Book submitted by dwick on June 24, 2023, 11:02am Great book. I am trying to get into reading and I really went through this book.

Great concept submitted by Princess Cimorene on August 22, 2023, 9:55pm Dystopian YA has gotten a little bit tiresome for me, but this story offers something unique to the genre. It asks deep questions and sets up a strange but totally believable world. The characters and interesting and nuanced. Will definitely be reading the rest of the series!
