Great book submitted by maggie_aa on August 25, 2018, 10:42pm great book, sweet story

Doesn't Make the Most of Its Big Idea submitted by Meginator on July 8, 2021, 6:47pm I adored the idea of this book, which blends new illustrations with the text of classic literature in a story extolling the virtues of reading. The use of text as illustrative component is incredibly innovative and creates some stunning, memorable imagery that contrasts sharply with the characters; this reinforces the book’s thematic elements and definitely makes a statement. I was a little put off by some of the specific classic texts referenced (though I assume the works are all older ones for copyright reasons), which are almost universally too daunting for the book’s intended audience and, in some cases, horrifically outdated (Robinson Crusoe comes to mind as a particularly egregious offender here). Likewise, the book takes a weird dig at “serious reading” by positioning True Literature as a foil to the newspaper; I’m all for literature as an excellent medium to cultivate understanding about the world and empathy for people different than ourselves, but it’s also kind of necessary to be able to parse factual information as well. So, although I fell in love with the concept of this book and even some elements of its execution, it fell a little flat for me in the end and I’m not sure exactly who it is meant for.
