Great Series submitted by schoenbaechlere on July 19, 2011, 1:16pm The books have lovely illustrations and updates at the end of the book (so not to alter the author's material) to make sure kids aren't learning what was accurate in the 1960s.
Surprisingly Okay for Its Age (With Hiccups) submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 10:10pm Written in 1959, this introduction to London may be significantly dated, but its age gives it a nostalgic sense of charm that makes the book work in the modern era. Unfortunately, Sasek’s inability or unwillingness to realistically portray nonwhite characters is so dated as to be actually offensive: both South Asian characters are men with beards and turbans, and a Black character is purple (yes, Sasek thought it was appropriate to use light purple to depict Black skin tones in a book where white characters are shown in more realistic shades of orange and pink). The content itself is a series of vignettes showing some of the city’s most prominent landmarks, including some bygone markets and districts or streets that are no longer home to the industries that once made them famous (helpfully, this edition includes endnotes about some of the more significant changes). Despite its age and its lack of accurate diversity, the book does resonate today with its tourist’s perspective of London in the late 1950s.
