I loved this book! submitted by philiptv on June 17, 2013, 3:45pm This book is so good. Except for the ending. I felt like I fell off the path and the end was abrupt.

Here we go Again... submitted by tomiwa on June 18, 2013, 12:57pm Bud, not Buddy was an exceptional book. It warmed my heart and I recommend it to all who like good books (which is all of us!).

wonderful story submitted by camelsamba on August 4, 2013, 8:17pm *Bud, not Buddy* is a wonderful mix of loss, adventure, and humor. Bud runs away from a bad foster home in Flint, and faces a number of adventures in his attempt to get to Grand Rapids. It is peppered with interesting facts about life during the Great Depression, as well as discrimination faced by African Americans in Michigan during that time period. It is also laced with humor, and funny bits where you are seeing the world from the eyes of a very sheltered young boy.

awww submitted by Jackie77 on July 12, 2015, 9:18pm Nice story about a boy searching for his roots and wanting to belong

Bud not Buddy submitted by cayleyrocks on July 22, 2018, 1:31pm Its' about a boy trying to find his dad and ends up sleeping in his mother's room. It's a fun children's book, I suggest it would really hit your heart if you are an orphan or adopted cuase he had to go to a lot of different houses. Parents could read it to their kids. It's a good learning experience.

Bud not Buddy submitted by dd8 on August 16, 2018, 12:02pm I love this story. Bud's voice really comes through. You really get to know him through his thoughts and actions. He has rules to help him survive everything life throws at him, though I suspect he makes them up as he goes. He has had a hard life, but he doesn't give up hope.

Heartfelt story submitted by leea on August 18, 2020, 12:32pm A 10-year-old African American orphan boy was running away to look for his father during the depression era. It gave us the insight where he came from and what he went though the journey to where he finally settle and belong "HOME"

Great historical fiction submitted by Xris on July 23, 2022, 12:17am I read this a while ago, but I still remember him traveling across Michigan by car, but at a time when it's not always safe for black people. And after hearing Lucy & Amanda talk about it in their Newberry Awards book video, I want to listen to it!

A great book submitted by czadams on August 16, 2023, 11:47pm We read this in 5th grade and I still remember it! It is a great way to talk about social justice. It sparked great thought and awareness. We had great discussions each day.

Michigan Historical Fiction submitted by khrobinson on August 27, 2023, 9:00pm This is a sweet book set in Michigan in the depression era. The main character is a Black boy whose mother has died. His story is focused on finding his father based on clues he remembers from his mother. Lots of heart warming scenes throughout. Good for young readers and adults.
