Budding children's book writer reviews A Long Way from Chicago submitted by unknown on June 23, 2018, 11:53am Author Richard Peck recently passed away, and I am on a quest to read all his books. This one is in a 3-part series, all of which include Grandma Dowdel, a larger-than-life widow who takes what life throws at her and thrives. The chapters follow the granddaughter for a year in the local high school. (She's sent there by her parents when the father loses his job, and they must move to a one-room rental. Her brother goes off to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps.) At the beginning of the story, the girl is mortified by her grandmother's weirdness and eccentricity. But as the year progresses, and Grandma helps her solve things at school and in her personal life that she cannot do on her own, she comes to accept and love her grandma deeply. This deals with class and social standing, poverty, ingeniousness, the value of industry and persisting in the face of awfulness, and is a great book.
Hilarious submitted by hduke on June 22, 2019, 12:24pm Grandma Dowel is feisty, fun, and full of heart - larger than life in these enjoyable stories set during the Great Depression. This book is well worth your time.
