Hare turns his bad luck around by striking a clever deal with the rich and lazy bear down the road.

A favorite submitted by andrea on August 31, 2012, 10:23pm This was one of my favorite read-alouds when I was an elementary school librarian. My students loved the hare's trickery, and the vertical presentation is fun.
A Caldecott Honor book that's fun to read submitted by FordAlpha on August 21, 2018, 10:51pm I have a problem with Caldecott Medal and Caldecott Honor winning books. They have great illustrations, of course, but too many of them are not much fun to read aloud to young kids. They have either too much text or not enough. Happily, "Tops & Bottoms" doesn't have that problem. The text and illustrations are perfectly balanced, and both are full of life. The unique presentation -- the entire book is printed sideways, so that the pages are read top-to-bottom rather than left-to-right -- catches kids' attention, and it's not merely a gimmick; it serves the story. My kids have enjoyed multiple readings of this book, and they are always delighted by the hare's ability to outwit the bear over and over.
