Good Read Aloud Historical Novel for Children submitted by Jen F-A on March 28, 2007, 10:01am My four-year-old daughter and I very much enjoyed reading this book aloud. She really liked hearing about five sisters who live on the lower East Side of New York at the beginning of the 20th Century. Because life was so different then, each chapter seemed very exotic to my daughter - and the addition of information about Jewish holidays and how they were celebrated back then - certainly kept her interest. If you have a child who can sit and listen to stories for 15 minutes at a time, this may be a very good book to choose. Girls who are in the third grade and above (and like history) will probably also enjoy reading this book.
My daughter summarizes with the statement "I really like it!"

Just as I remembered submitted by adimarzo on June 21, 2014, 3:54pm I loved the All of a Kind Family books when I was a child and re-reading them with my daughter brought back great memories. My daughter is 5 and this is the first non-picture book i have read to her. Even without colorful pictures the stories held her attention. I look forward to sharing the rest of the series with her.

classic middle-grade historical fiction submitted by camelsamba on July 10, 2014, 4:16pm I learned about this book in an NPR story about "classic YA" fiction. I consider this more middle grade than YA - it's more about family life than e.g. self-discovery or coming of age (possible exception: the oldest girl's crush). I would have adored this book if if read it growing up - the life of a Jewish family in NYC in the early 1900s would have seemed so exotic to my small-town-New-Mexico self! Push carts! Crowded street markets! Penny candy! Exotic.

Historical fiction submitted by Lucy S on July 27, 2014, 4:49am This book and all the books in this series do a great job of transporting the reader to New York's Lower East Side in the early 19th century.

One of my favorites as a child submitted by ValerieL on June 26, 2019, 2:54pm The All of a Kind Family was one of my favorite book series when I was a child. I loved reading about Ella, Henrietta, Sarah, Charlotte, and Gertie. I learned a lot about Jewish culture and holidays through these books and am looking forward to passing them on to my niece when she gets just a little older.
