Content Note: One illustration includes an outdated and negatively stereotypical portrayal of Indigenous Americans.
Despite its age (and the entry for I, alluded to above), this alphabet book holds up exceptionally well over time, largely due to its simplicity. Each letter of the alphabet finds members of an alligator family engaging in various activities described with two to three words beginning with the letter in question. Sendak’s solution for the perpetually vexing X is clever, if a bit of a cheat, and unfortunately the least convincing entry comes at the end with Z. However, the illustrations are clever (even if the outfits are a bit dated!) and take the words literally, often to excellent humorous effect. Watch out for I, but consider giving this older alphabet book a look for its excellent visual sense of humor.
